For
those of you who are unfamiliar with the Black Friday holiday celebrated in the
United States, we would like to explain what exactly it is, how it began and
why it is important for you as an affiliate.
Black
Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving (which is the last Thursday in
November). Unlike Thanksgiving, Black Friday is not an official holiday in the United States. Many employers will give their employees the
day off as part of their Thanksgiving leave. As a result, the number of nationwide shoppers
increases to officially kick-start the holiday shopping season. Many stores
will open their doors very early in the morning (around 5:00am). Most recently,
some stores have started opening their doors at midnight. These retailers offer
shoppers extreme discounts for a limited amount of time or until products run
out.
The
term Black Friday has many different origins, but a common term has to do with
an accounting theory. Retailers traditionally operate at a financial loss
during the year and accountants will record amounts in red ink. The holiday
season is usually when retailers start to turn profit and accountants will
switch to black ink to show the positive amounts; hence the term, Black Friday.
Black
Friday is a HUGE online shopping day, so as an affiliate, you should be
prepared. Now that you know more about the history of Black Friday, we want to
share some amazing statistics from Black Friday 2011 with you:
- Online sales were up 39.3% on Thanksgiving Day and 24.3% on Black Friday compared to the year before
